Speakeasy Cinema #7, Monday SEPTEMBER 18th: Filmmaker Pedro Carvajal
When: MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 18th doors open @ 7 PM, movie starts at 7:30
Where: 279 Church Street, New York, NY 10013 - 3 blocks below Canal St- across from the Tribeca Grand.
How Much: $5 at the door...You can bring a bottle of wine to share with fellow artists & the general public.
SPEAKEASY CINEMA will provide an opportunity for the film community to watch movies and talk about them in the mood of the Algonquin Roundtable. Every third monday, Matt Kohn will introduce a different director, producer, actor, or editor who will present a film that they have chosen. No one in the audience will know which film it is until the lights dim. After the screening, the filmmaker will engage everyone in the room in ways that will bring about a greater appreciation of cinema, and break the fourth wall. At this intimate event industry talk is verboten, but your libations are welcome (read: BYOB or wine and we will have the corkscrew).
Next month we welcome special guest, Venezuelan born filmmaker Pedro Carvajal. Director Pedro Carvajal's latest feature is entitled "POPaganda: The Art & Crimes of Ron English". POPaganda premiered at AFI FEST in LA, and is distributed by Cinema Libre. It can be rented on Netflix. Carvajal is also the director of "Sabor Latino", "Special K" and "Citizen Art." Mr. Carvajal is currently working in his next feature documentary about the Yanomami culture from the Amazon Rainforest in southern Venezuela; he lives in Brooklyn.
Speakeasy Cinema has a few rules:
1) our guests bring a film and no one one knows what it is until the lights dim
2) the film can't be a film the guests have worked on, only a film they love or hate, think is important, inspiring and want to talk about
3) after the film, the audiences and the filmmakers share their experiences watching the film. We talk about ART.
4) industry talk is verboten!
5) we can drink in this theater, so please bring a bottle to share with your friends and the people around you! (We provide the corkscrew and the glasses)
6) we do it the third Monday of every month
SPEAKEASY CINEMA is created, produced and hosted by Matt Kohn, director of the feature documentary Call it Democracy. It is co-produced by Eddie Gilbert Herch, dramaturge from the Fifth Night Screenplay Series, and the Collective Unconscious. It is supported by Shootingpeople.com and the AIVF.
