Screening of Gay Filmmaker Thomas Harris' Chronicle of South African Freedom Fighters
Thomas Allen Harris, a gay, Bronx-born, Harvard-educated filmmaker, rediscovers his stepfather's past as a South African freedom fighter in the moving, feature-length documentary Twelve Disciples of Nelson Mandela. The film chronicles the fate of a dozen students who became stateless criminals by burning their pass cards to protest new laws prohibiting all but vocational education for black South Africans. The day after the film's premiere on P.O.V., public television's showcase for point-of-view, nonfiction films, director Harris screens it at Out Professionals.
