NYC Film/Spoken Word Poetry Workshops Starts 10/22/06

WHAT:
REELS and RHYMES is a new Urban Word NYC workshop which blends film screenings and open mics to initiate awareness and dialogue about social issues affecting today’s youth.

WHEN:
For eight weeks starting October 22nd from 3-6, we will alternate four film screenings and four open mics.

Our first film is THE GROUND TRUTH, a raw and powerful documentary on the war in Iraq. Following the screening, a special appearance will be made by Demond Mullins. Demond is a 24-year old veteran from Brooklyn who is featured in the film. He will share his experiences in Iraq as well as speak about counter recruitment in public high schools. A DJ set will follow.


The following screening on November 5th will be Jails, Hospitals and Hip Hop with a guest appearance by Danny Hoch. Other films TBA.


LOCATION:
Retreat, 147 Front Street in Dumbo Brooklyn (Take the F train to York Street, walk one block towards the water and make a left.)
