Film and Talk: Truth in Advertising

Artist Bob Stayton will discuss his work and ideas behind his installation piece which features press releases, posters, and other materials relating to his days as a participant in the Billboard Alteration Project by Truth in Advertising. The presentation will also feature a film screening of Pedro Carvajal's film Popaganda: The Art & Crimes of Ron English. The movie is an eye-opening journey through the life and career of this renegade artist. English got his work out into the world by replacing paid advertisement billboards with his own art. Soon this grew into his altering billboard ads, twisting them so that they actually spoke the truth. Come join us for an enlightening talk and powerful film! Location: MAH Auditorium, 6:00-8:00pm, cost: $3.00/members; $5.00/non-members. This program is held in partnership with the Santa Cruz Film Festival. Get your tickets in advance by calling (831) 429-1964 x 10!

Truth in Advertising: A History of the Social/Political Movement in Santa Cruz
Exhibition Closes

POPaganda: The Art & Crimes of Ron English is a film about the culture-jamming and billboard-liberation antics of Ron English. The modern day Robin Hood of Madison Avenue, Ron paints, perverts, infiltrates, reinvents and satirizes modern culture on canvas, in songs, and directly on hundreds of pirated billboards. Shot entirely guerilla-style, the film chronicles the evolution of an artist who offers an alternative universe where nothing is sacred, everything is subverted and there's always room for a little good-natured fun.
