Dec. 4-8: Un Tour d’Europe du doc, Paris, FR

Un tour d’Europe du doc
Paris, France
December 4 - 8 2007
European meeting
of documentary filmmakers

Hosted by Addoc, Un tour d’Europe du doc brings together the European Documentary Filmmakers' Associations in order to discuss European documentary filmmaking and its financing.

The event, open to all, is focused on round tables, screenings of European documentaries and encounters with the filmmakers. In an increasingly challenging artistic and economic context, Addoc’s documentary filmmakers feel the need to develop new synergies with their European counterparts. The idea is to defend original documentaries on a collective level for, even though documentary films have encountered a certain success with audiences, their financing is more and more precarious and their diversity under threat.

Un tour d'Europe du doc is an opportunity to discover other cultures and working realities, to pool experiences and to consider common strategy. There is an urgent need to inform and apply pressure on the authorities and European institutions so that documentaries do not disappear from our screens (TV, theatres and alternative screenings).

An event hosted by Addoc in partnership with the European Associations of Documentary Filmmakers and foreign cultural institutes in Paris.

THE SCREENINGS
Un tour d'Europe du doc invites you on a journey of European documentary creation. All films presented have been selected by partner documentary associations.

Each association was invited to propose films that were representative of the cinema they support. From this, a group of directors attached to Addoc drew up a program of films produced over the last few years to provide a glimpse of the diversity of creative approaches in Europe. Whether dealing with Slav illegal immigrants in Portugal (Lisboners) the condition of women in Turkey (Naze), or elderly shop- keepers in Vienna for whom time has stood still (Aus der Zeit), there are often resonances between the films, with filmmakers engagingly placing the people at the centre of their preoccupations. All projections will be followed by a discussion with the filmmaker, giving creators a chance to share, exchange and reflect with the audience.

THE ROUND TABLES
The round table discussions bring together documentary associations from fourteen European countries. They are designed as public work sessions and their aim is to answer specific questions: how to free the author-documentary from the general format imposed by television company involvement in the production process?
