The New School, Wollman Hall, 65 West 11th Street (enter at 66 West 12th Street)
Admission: Free

With films like Crash; television shows like Grey's Anatomy and Arrested Development and independent documentaries being produced faster than you can say "CUT!"..., a panel of filmmakers discuss issues of racism and class in current Hollywood cinema, independent film and commercial television and listen to what they have learned from working on these contemporary topics. Where do these images originate? What are the underlying assumptions behind these images? What social function might these portrayals serve? Has there been intentional inclusion or omission of these topics from mainstream media cultures? What role does the documentary play in countering these representations? Moderated by New School professor and independent media consultant, Michelle Materre, this panel will include excerpts from New School student presentations on this same topic. Panelists include: Sophia Chang, Manager of producers/composers, including the RZA, Raphael Saadiq, Organized Noize, Pete Rock; and Film Producer, "Shaolin and Wu Tang" (HBO); Sonia Gonzalez, Director/Producer, Blind Leading the Blind (2007), Remembering Ragtime (2004); City by the Sea (2002); and Sofia Quintero, Board Chair/Co-founder, Chica Luna Productions. Sponsored by the Center for Communication and the Department of Media Studies and Film at The New School.
