Apr. 11: Screening of Oscar winning film Freeheld at the New School, New York, NY
The New School is having a free screening of FREEHELD by Cynthia Wade. The film won an Oscar for Best Documentary short this year.
"Freeheld chronicles the struggle of Laurel Hester, a detective in a local New Jersey police department who is dying of cancer, to transfer her pension to her domestic partner, Stacie Andree. With less than six months to live, Laurel refuses to back down when the elected officials of Ocean County, New Jersey, deny her request to leave her pension to her partner, an option granted only to heterosexual married couples. Freeheld captures the media frenzy and passionate advocacy campaign spurred by Laurel's plight; it also tells the quieter, personal story of the deep love between Laurel and Stacie as they face the reality of losing each other."
The screening is Friday, April 11, at 7pm at:
Tishman Auditorium
Alvin Johnson/J. M. Kaplan Hall
66 West 12th Street
New York, NY
