Call for Entries: Video Contest to Provide Solutions for Nation's Transportation Problems

Citizens Go Viral to Provide Solutions for Nation's Transportation Problems

"We need a new vision for public transportation in America, so we're calling on citizens to film it!" says Annie Chau, media outreach
coordinator for the contest at U.S. PIRG. "We want short independent videos about why we need more and better public transportation. With America's transportation system at a crossroads, what should a 21st century transit system for our country look like or not look like?"

With America's transportation system buckling under high gas prices, congestion, and global warming threats, many have called for the next six-year transportation bill to steer the country in a new direction.

U.S. PIRG notes that America has more cars per capita than any other nation in the world. The number of miles driven on America's highways has doubled in the last quarter-century.

"Our reliance on cars for transportation is at the root of many of our most intractable problems. We need a transportation system built for the needs of the 21st century," says John Krieger, an advocate at U.S. PIRG.

As transit ridership has boomed across the country, U.S. PIRG is encouraging citizens to envision the future of alternative ransportation. "By asking citizens across the nation to send us
videos about the future of public transportation and other alternatives to driving, we hope to empower these citizens and work on their behalf," says Chau.

The winning videos will be used to help decision-makers understand the need to make it easier for Americans to drive less and to imagine a better future. The videos will be used to educate state and local officials and to call on Washington, D.C. to improve the way it funds our transportation system.

Videos are due July 4th, 2008. With the support of the Wallace Global Foundation, the winner will receive a $500 prize and will be featured on the U.S. PIRG website. Runners-up will win $250, $150, and honorable mentions will receive a one-year membership to U.S. PIRG.
