April 19: Immigrant Heritage Week Film Program at Maysles Cinema
Third World Newsreel, the Standby Program and the Maysles Cinema would like to invite you to celebrate New York City Immigrant Heritage Week with a special program featuring documentaries about creative expression and the immigration experience. Immigrant Heritage Week honors the vibrant immigrant cultures, heritages and communities found in every corner of the City. Join us on Monday, April 19th starting at 7:30PM.
The Mist
Iranian filmmaker, Maryam Habibian, chronicles her return to Iran after 30 years to observe a new culture of art and ideas that has taken root and flourishes, side by side with fundamentalist traditions.
Two Dollar Dance
Spanish filmmaker Yolanda Pividal chronicles the experience of Latino immigrants who fill the dance clubs of Jackson Heights where they meet the “two-dollar ballerinas”, women who will be their dance floor partners for two dollars a song.
The Bus
Iranian born filmmaker Zahra Partovi takes us on a international and cross cultural journey inspired by the poetry of Federico Garcia Lorca told by music and spoken word in 12 different languages; from Chinese to Swiss.
Filmmakers will be present for Q & A to follow.
