October 5: Non-Fiction Cinema Classes With Kevin Keating at the Brecht Forum in New York, NY
Non-Fiction Cinema: A Dialectical Method
with Kevin Keating
A series of lectures/screenings with filmmaker Kevin Keating. An opportunity to analyze and discuss American documentary long-form films, their production, potential audiences, social change impulses and impacts. With an emphasis on films Keating has shot/produced, we will screen elements from a variety of films released theatrically, from Maysles Gimme Shelter, Barbara Kopple’s Harlan County, USA, to Keating’s most recently produced Giuliani Time.
We will begin with Expropriating the Expropriators-in which we explore how utilizing a segment actually produced by Giuliani forces for a “Press Roast”- Posted on YouTube as “Giuliani In Drag with Trump” went viral and generated nearly one million viewings and worldwide press coverage and materially damaged Giuliani’s campaign for the Republican nomination for President in 2008.
Each session will concentrate on related but separate component elements comprising strategies for producing and releasing social change documentaries, the vistas enlarged with the unimagined possibilities for world media exposure through YouTube, the diminution in production costs with the mini DV equipment revolution, sophisticated editing technologies now easily accomplished on a laptop computer.
