Synopsis:
What do we really know about wind power? We are told it’s green energy that reduces our dependency on foreign oil. That’s exactly what the people of Meredith in upstate New York thought when a wind developer offered to supplement the town’s failing economy with a farm of 40 industrial wind turbines. Attracted at first to the financial incentives, townspeople grew alarmed when they found out about side effects they had never anticipated.
Windfall exposes the dark side of wind energy development and the potential for its exploitation in highly profitable financial scams. With wind development in the US growing annually by 39%, the film is an eye-opener for anyone concerned about the future of renewable energy. It premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2010, screened at the International Documentary Festival of Amsterdam and won the Grand Jury Prize at DOCNYC.
Don Faller, executive producer, began his career working on Don Kirschner’s Rock Concert TV series before producing commercials at leading advertising agencies. In 1997, he became head of production at Notorious Pictures. In 2002, Faller established Doublewide Media to create documentaries, web content and advertising. There he produced the documentaries Life for a Child, In the Hearts of Africa, The Excellent Theopolis, 3 Points and, most recently, Windfall. Other credits include: Cell Stories for Motorola, GQ Magazine’s GQ Rules web series, Encyclopedia of Life, Isabella Rossellini’s Green Porno and numerous arts media collaborations with such museums as the Tate Gallery in London and the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney museums in New York.
Stacey Foster, co-producer and editor, is a film/video editor based in NYC. She recently finished editing Isabella Rossellini’s Animals Distract Me which will be broadcast on Discovery’s Planet Green Network this spring. Her editing credits include the Seduce Me and Green Porno series for the Sundance Channel. She also edited Art Walk ‘09. Foster’s documentary credits include a half hour special for VH1 about Pearl Jam’s album Ten and the foreign language short documentary Life for a Child. She also edited webisodes for the Chicago Bears’ Jay Cutler about his struggle with diabetes, as well as a variety of webisodes for GQ.com.
Laura Israel, director, has been photographer/filmmaker Robert Frank’s editor for nearly two decades, cutting True Story, which won a main prize at the 2009 International Short Film Festival in Oberhausen, and The President, which also won the grand prize there. Paper Route was a finalist at the Tribeca Film Festival and won the Cinema Texas Short Film Festival. She also edited Africa Unite, Life For A Child and Music Of Regret. In addition to winning a Monitor Award for editing, Israel has garnered AICP awards, International Film and TV awards, a GLAAD award and an Emmy.
Brian Jackson, director of photography, has worked as both a commercial director and cinematographer for the past 12 years, honing his filmmaking skills over a variety of projects. His work in documentary filmmaking has taken him to many parts of the world, from war-torn Africa to remote villages in Peru. When he’s not shooting, he can be found climbing and camping.
Autumn Tarleton, producer, most recently made Isabella Rossellini’s documentary Animals Distract Me, which premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. Last year, she produced In The Hearts Of Africa. In 2008, she also post-produced Life For A Child, named best documentary short at the 2009 Cinequest Film Festival. Over the past four years, she produced the three-time Webby-nominated series GQ Rules and the popular Verge Girl series. She also produced a web series about quarterback Jay Cutler’s triumph over diabetes and post-produced Isabella Rossellini’s Webby-nominated series Green Porno and Seduce Me for the Sundance Channel.
