DJ Spooky

DJ Spooky sums himself up in three words.  “Artist, Writer, Musician.”  His art has been exhibited in the Whitney Biennial; the Ludwig Museum in Cologne, Germany; and The Andy Warhol Museum among others.  He has written two books, Rhythm Science and Sound Unbound, which was released just this year.  And on top of all that, DJ Spooky has created nine albums that critics and fans describe as “acid rap” and “illbient” music.  He also created the score for the 1998 film Slam.

DJ Spooky on the Power of Film

Documentaries are the way we can tell truth to power.  They exist in a world where how you tell a story can be just as powerful as the story itself.  Jean Rouch’s 1960 film “Chronicles of a Summer” is usually credited with starting cinema verite—looking at life as it’s lived.  Documentaries are still looking to that idea.  We need it more than ever!

DJ Spooky’s Film Picks

Chronicle of a Summer: Real is as real does.  Jean Rouch walked around Paris asking people if they’re happy. I think that’s cool.

Triad Election: Triad Election “Hak se wui yi wo wai kwai (2006)” is Social Darwinism at it’s best.

Take Out: Y’all better learn Chinese!

The Battle of Algiers: Even the CIA is watching this film. It shows how insurrection and occupation are eerily connected. BRILLIANT!

Last Year at Marienbad: L’Annee Derniere a Marienbad (1961) = everything is repeating, because everything is repeating, because everything is repeating…
