90-Second Cinema: The Devil Came On Horseback
The Devil Came On Horseback, an excerpt
In The Devil Came on Horseback, filmmakers Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg use different source media to tell one man's account of genocide in Darfur. In this 90-Second Cinema there are, by my count, nineteen photographs or freeze frames used (admitted some may be reused), five close-ups of the main character with his camera, and two b-roll sequences of men in a truck. Image-wise this is all that we are looking at. It's not a lot. But with motion on the photographs, rapid cuts and various uses of sound (camera shutter, horses and music) the filmmakers who could not have been there with their cameras rolling to document this event, elegantly put together an entertaining and informative story for this ninety seconds.
