People should never die because of a mistake. But in a world fueled by soccer and drugs, a mistake can mean certain death. In this month’s 90-Second Cinema, The Two Escobars, two Colombian men—one a renowned drug dealer; the other, a star soccer player—get tangled up in what the film calls “narco- soccer.” Pablo Escobar, the world’s most profitable criminal in the late 1980’s-early 1990’s, was worth over 3 billion dollars through money laundering that ultimately seeped through Colombian soccer. Andrés Escobar (no relation to Pablo) was a soccer player who played defense for his country’s national team during the 1990’s. The two men’s relationship dated back to the slums where they grew up. But in the end, these two Escobars ultimately played a key role in ending the glory years of Colombian soccer.
The Two Escobars is comprised of many interviews that will make your heart sink, footage of soccer games played by the local teams, pictures of slums, and recordings of men who will spend the rest of their lives behind bars. Amidst all the hardships Colombia was experiencing in the 1990s, the country’s strive for a new image rested upon the national soccer team.
In these 90 seconds, the documentary depicts life for the national team at its highest point combining intimate interviews with the soccer players and sports clips from the actual games, brushing away the underlying theme of danger, greed, and murder. Between 1991-1993, the Colombian national soccer team emerged victorious in many of twenty-six games against other national teams, gaining a new image for Colombia. The pressure to win is absent from these 90 seconds; in its place, the joy of the Colombian people.

about 90SC
Each month MediaRights.org will select a video clip from a social-issue piece of media and present it to its visitors to watch, comment-on and forward to their peers. Clips will be no longer than ninety seconds. As social-issue media increases on television, in theaters and on-line, we want to highlight the art of this important content. Stay tuned each month to see which film and what scene we are highlighting!
